Helen was born October 23, 1927, in Chesterfield, Missouri, to Clarence Minor and Hattie Green. Soon after Hattie married Fred Hawkins, Sr., and Helen was blessed to be raised by two loving fathers. Helen was the eldest of nine children: Dorothy, Fred Jr., Clifford, Laura, Virginia Genevieve, Shirley and Della. She grew up in Chesterfield, Missouri, and graduated from Douglas High School in 1946 at the top of her class.
Helen entered into holy matrimony with Robert L. Johnson on September 28, 1947. Shortly thereafter, they moved to New York, where she became a well-sought-after seamstress and a well-
established Avon salesperson. She worked for the New York City Police Department for over 20 years. She retired from the police department in 1993.
She maintained life-long friendships in New York but stayed close with her family by returning home often. She relocated back to St. Louis,
Missouri, in 1999.
Helen was a pillar in her family and community. She was a devoted daughter, sister, aunt, and friend. She was preceded in death by her parents, spouse, and seven siblings. She leaves to cherish her memory: loving sister, Virginia Hawkins, and dear and devoted sister-in-law, Tracey Rahn, who faithfully stood by her side, who cared and nurtured her through sickness; two special nieces, Angela and Laverne, who gave unconditional love and care during her advancing years; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and her Union Baptist Church Family.
Her life was a blessing, her memory a treasure. She is loved beyond words and will be missed beyond measure.
