Elson Shelton Jr.

Elson Shelton Jr was born on February 17, 1942 in Jonesboro, Arkansas to the union of Ernestine (Johnson) Shelton and Elson Shelton Sr. Elson enlisted into the United States Army in 1968 where he served in the Vietnam War. In the early 1960’s he moved to Saint Louis. In 1963 he met young Gloria (Brewington) Shelton and they married in 1966. To this union two children were born and two were brought into this union.

Elson was a laborer by trade but he was also a comedian. He enjoyed joking and making others laugh. He was the life of the party and one of his favorite sayings was “no Joke”. In his later years he loved to sit and watch Matt Lock and Gun smoke. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. If they were not around he would call and say “How is your day going and how is …” then he would hang up. He was never a big talker on the phone. Elson loved to eat, he would call any one of us and ask for Popeye’s Chicken (Ghost Pepper wings), Reese’s peanut butter cups and an ice cold Pepsi.

Elson took his last breath on Sunday morning, February 25, 2024. He leaves to mourn his care-giver/ex-wife Gloria Shelton; oldest daughter Annette Burton (Bobby Burton); son-Terrell Shelton; son-Tracy Shelton (Lorirose Womack), youngest child- Tamara Tomlin (Corey Tomlin). Also siblings: Gary Wayne Lasley Sr. (Deborah Lasley) and two sisters Donna Shelton and Vita Shelton.  He will truly be missed by his grandchildren: Anthony Thomas, Evette Burton, Renee Hayes; Brandon Casey; Khematen Shelton; Travionne Shelton; Twins (Tia and Tiara), Tamya, Taylor Tomlin, Kori Tomlin, Cody Tomlin, Taydem Tomlin.  Great grandchildren: Jayce Holmes and Paisley Tomlin and Khe-Saum Shelton. Longtime friend: Loweta Lagrone, Step-sister Patty Martin and Special friend of 15 years: Marsha Williams.
